Yuliia Zahnybida (JZ Tattoo): Internationally Recognized Artist and Creator of the JZ Optima Technique

Convention wins, judging invitations, and a proprietary technique have earned this Fine Line and Black & Grey realism artist a reputation that extends well beyond her studio walls.
Yuliia, professionally known as JZ Tattoo, represents a new generation of artists whose work transcends geographic boundaries and elevates industry standards.
Since beginning her professional career in 2018, Yuliia has established an international presence, working across Ukraine, Germany, Belgium, Canada, and the United States. Her work in Fine Line and Black & Grey realism reflects a refined balance of precision, artistic sensitivity, and technical control.
In a field where bold color, heavy saturation, and maximalist compositions dominate convention floors and social media feeds, Yuliia Zahnybida has built her reputation on something harder to pull off: subtlety. Her work lives in the Fine Line and Black & Grey realism tradition—delicate tonal compositions where the skill is measured not by how much ink hits the skin, but by how precisely it is placed.
It is an approach that demands exceptional technical control and a deep understanding of how skin receives and holds pigment. The results—smooth gradients, detailed portraiture, soft textures rendered with a lightness that suggests graphite on paper rather than needle on skin—have earned her recognition from professional peers, competition panels, and industry publications.
Central to her artistic identity is the development of the JZ Optima technique—a proprietary method that represents a significant original contribution to the field. Focused on precision, reduced skin trauma, and long-term visual clarity, this technique advances both the technical and aesthetic standards of modern tattooing.
Yuliia’s career is marked by international practice, participation in professional conventions, industry recognition, and invitations to serve as a judge—all reflecting her growing influence within the global tattoo community.

Can you introduce yourself and describe your professional journey?
My name is Yuliia, though most people know me as Julia—that’s what my clients have called me for years, and it naturally became part of my professional identity as JZ Tattoo. I began my career in tattooing in 2018, but my connection to art started much earlier.
Over time, I developed my skills through constant practice and by working in different countries. Each new environment challenged me in a different way and helped shape both my artistic voice and technical precision. That journey—across cultures, styles, and professional standards—is what ultimately defined who I am as an artist today.

Why did you choose Fine Line and Black & Grey realism?
I actually started with Fine Line during my early learning period—it was the first style I truly connected with. It taught me discipline, precision, and control, because in Fine Line every detail matters and there’s no room for error.
About a year later, I began exploring Black & Grey realism. I was drawn to the depth and emotion it allows you to create—it’s a completely different way of thinking, more about volume, contrast, and storytelling.
A turning point came when I was invited to work in Germany. There, I started working in both styles simultaneously, which really pushed me to grow. Instead of choosing one direction, I learned how to balance them and use the strengths of each.
Since then, I’ve continued developing both Fine Line and Black & Grey realism side by side. They’re very different, but that’s exactly what makes them so powerful together—one brings precision and elegance, the other adds depth and expression. For me, this combination creates a strong and versatile artistic language.

What makes your expertise unique?
My expertise is defined by the combination of original technical development and refined artistic execution. I have developed a distinct working method, including the adaptation of specialized tools, which allows me to achieve results not commonly attainable through standard tattoo techniques.
This approach reflects a high level of technical control and artistic consistency, positioning my work as both distinctive and difficult to replicate.

What makes your technique an innovation, and how does it differ from others?
What makes this technique innovative is the level of precision and control it allows, while also reducing trauma to the skin for better healing and long-term clarity.
What sets it apart is the balance between delicacy and longevity. Fine line tattoos often lose definition over time, and traditional methods can be too aggressive. My approach avoids both, keeping the work clean, soft, and stable as it ages.

Can you explain your original contribution—the JZ Optima technique?
The JZ Optima technique developed over time through practice, experimentation, and working with different styles and skin types. It’s the result of years of refining my approach.
At the beginning, I struggled to find the perfect needle for fine lines and proper healing—standard tattoo needles didn’t give me the results I was looking for. That’s why I started experimenting and, for Fine Line work, I began using ultra-thin needles typically used in permanent makeup. This allowed me to achieve cleaner lines and work more delicately with the skin.
At its core, the technique is about precision and longevity. I combine the accuracy of Fine Line with the depth of Black & Grey realism, focusing on control—clean lines, soft transitions, and how the tattoo naturally follows the body.
Minimizing skin trauma is also a key part of my approach, so the tattoo heals well and maintains its clarity over time. In the end, it’s a balance between technical control and artistic sensitivity—the work looks soft, refined, and highly precise.

What impact have you had on the field?
My impact is reflected through sustained national and international recognition, including industry awards and invitations to serve as a judge at professional tattoo conventions.
In addition, I work with an international client base, with clients traveling specifically to receive my work, which demonstrates the demand for my technique and artistic approach across multiple markets.
Together, these factors position me as a recognized specialist contributing to the evolution of precision-based tattooing within the global industry.

What recognition have you received within the industry?
In 2024, I received 1st place in the Fine Line category at the Miami Tattoo Convention. In 2025, I was awarded both 1st and 2nd place in the Fresh and Healed Fine Line categories at the Orlando Tattoo Show.
These results are directly connected to the technique I’ve developed—JZ Optima—which allows me to achieve a high level of precision, softness, and long-term quality in my work.
I’ve also been invited to serve as a judge at the Villain Arts Tattoo Convention in Orlando and the Orlando Tattoo Show. For me, this reflects not only recognition, but also a level of trust in my technical expertise and professional judgment within the industry.

Do you see other artists trying to replicate your technique?
Yes, and that’s natural. When a strong idea appears, it begins to spread. However, technique is not just the final visual result—it’s also the mindset, process, and experience behind it, which cannot be copied directly.

Your work has been featured in international publications such as Global, Steelo, Tattoo Life, and INKPPL. How important is this for you?
It’s an important recognition of my work on a global level. These platforms influence the international tattoo industry, and being featured there means that my technique and artistic approach resonate beyond my local environment

What ideas do you express through your work?
For me, every tattoo is more than just a visual piece—it’s something personal. I always try to create a balance between aesthetics and meaning, so the work not only looks strong visually but also feels right for the person wearing it.
I focus a lot on depth and individuality. I don’t like repeating the same ideas—even if the style is recognizable, each piece should have its own character and emotion. Sometimes it’s something very minimal and delicate, sometimes more complex and detailed, but it always comes from the client’s story and my artistic vision combined.
I also think a lot about how the tattoo will live over time—how it will age, how it will sit on the body, how it will still feel relevant years later. For me, it’s important that the work feels timeless, not just trendy.

You work with clients from Ukraine, Germany, Belgium, Canada, and the United States. How does working internationally influence your art? Why are clients willing to travel from other countries to work with you?
Working internationally has had a huge influence on me as an artist. Every country has its own aesthetic preferences, mindset, and expectations, so I’ve learned to understand people on a deeper level, not just visually but emotionally too.
At the same time, no matter where my clients come from, they’re all looking for something very similar—a unique, personal piece that feels different and truly theirs. I think that’s what connects all of them.
As for why people are willing to travel to work with me—I believe it comes down to trust and a recognizable artistic approach. Over time, I’ve developed a style and technique that people can’t easily find elsewhere, and they know exactly what kind of result to expect from me. Right now, I’m based in Orlando, Florida, working at Carcosa Tattoo, and I’m also preparing to open my own studio in the near future. I think this also gives clients a clear understanding of where to find me and be part of my work.
I also put a lot of attention into the experience itself—from the first idea to the final result. Clients feel involved in the process, and that creates a strong connection to the work. For many of them, it’s not just about getting a tattoo, it’s about getting something meaningful, created specifically for them.

What are your future goals?
My future goals are centered on continuing to refine and expand the JZ Optima Needle Technique and establishing it more broadly within fine line and black and grey realism tattooing.
I plan to keep developing the method through advanced practice, experimentation, and ongoing technical improvement, with the aim of increasing precision, reducing skin trauma, and elevating the overall quality of this style of tattooing.
I also plan to continue participating in major tattoo conventions in the United States and internationally, both as an artist and as a judge. Through these roles, I hope to share my approach with a wider professional audience and contribute to the evolution of technical standards in contemporary tattooing.
In the long term, I would like to establish a network of studios and educational platforms dedicated to training artists in advanced techniques, including the JZ Optima Needle Technique. By mentoring other professionals and promoting high technical standards, I hope to make a lasting contribution to the field.
