Maksym Yanko

Can you please start by introducing yourself and telling us about your journey as a tattoo artist?

My name is Maksym Yanko. I’m a professional tattoo artist originally from Ukraine and currently based in Los Angeles. I’ve been tattooing for over 10 years. My journey began with drawing from a very young age, and over time that passion naturally turned into tattooing. Today it is not just my profession — it is my lifestyle.

You specialize in realism — what originally drew you to this style, and why did you choose it?

Realism allows me to bring emotions, memories, and stories to life on skin. I was always fascinated by how detailed art can create a strong emotional connection. This style challenges me technically and creatively, and that’s why I chose it.

You create amazing tattoos in both color and black and gray. Do you have a preference between the two?

I work in both color and black & gray, but in most cases I prefer color realism because of its depth, vibrancy, and level of detail. Color allows me to create more emotion, contrast, and realism in my work.

How do you approach your design process to balance your clients’ ideas with your own artistic vision?

My design process always starts with communication. I listen to the client carefully, understand their story, emotions, and expectations. Then I combine their vision with my artistic experience, knowledge of anatomy, composition, and flow. I don’t simply copy references — I build a complete artwork that fits the body naturally and looks powerful not only today, but years later.

You’ve attended several conventions and won many awards. Congratulations, well deserved How have these experiences influenced your career, and what do they bring you as an artist?

They pushed me to grow and continuously improve. Each event gave me new motivation and a deeper understanding of my craft.
This year was especially important for me — I won Best of Show in Arizona, which is the highest award for me personally. I also received many other nominations such as Best of Day , Best Portrait, Best Collaboration.. In total, I won 18 awards between March and October, and I truly believe this is an incredible achievement.

You are sponsored by a tattoo supply company, which is a great achievement for any artist. How has this influenced your career?

Being sponsored by Mad Rabbit and EZ Tattoo is a huge honor for me, and I am truly grateful to them. It gives me the opportunity to work with the best products and constantly improve the quality of my work.

Every artist faces challenges. What were some of the biggest obstacles you’ve had to overcome in your tattoo career?

One of the biggest challenges was starting my career as a tattoo artist in the U.S. from zero. New country, new culture, new rules — but I never gave up and continued building my name through hard work.

What piece of advice would you give an artist to help them improve their style – something you personally found helpful?

My main advice is to stay patient and consistent. Tattooing is not about fast success — it’s about building a strong foundation. Study anatomy, light, shadow, and composition. Never stop learning, never think you are “good enough.” Respect your craft, respect your clients, and always push yourself to be better than yesterday.

Do you have any exciting plans or upcoming projects you’d like to share?

I plan to continue expanding my presence across the United States through guest spots and tattoo conventions. I want to work with more international studios, build stronger collaborations, and develop my personal brand.

And finally – how do you like to spend your free time outside of art and tattooing?

In my free time, I like to slow down and step away from the studio. I often go for long walks to clear my mind and reconnect with myself. At home, I enjoy listening to music on vinyl records — it helps me relax and creates a special atmosphere that inspires my creativity. Fishing is another passion of mine; it teaches patience and gives me time to reflect. Most importantly, I truly value spending quality time with my family, because their support and presence are a huge part of my life and motivation.
