We’re proud to feature Eike as part of our November issue and share a closer look into his story and approach to tattooing.

Can you start by introducing yourself and telling us about your journey as a tattoo artist?
My name is Eike Schumacher, a German-born tattoo artist and co-owner of Carolina Icon Ink in Mount Holly, North Carolina, which I proudly run together with my wife, Sophia Schumacher. I’ve always been obsessed with drawing and fine detail, and that passion naturally led me into tattooing—first creating custom designs for friends, and over time building a strong client base through word of mouth.
After moving to the United States with my family, we decided to open our own studio to create a space built on authenticity, high-quality work, and a welcoming atmosphere. Today I’m best known for realistic, story-driven tattoos—especially black and grey pieces, cover-ups, and unique custom designs created specifically for each client. What drives me is simple: creating something permanent that still feels alive every time you look at it.
You specialize mainly in black and grey realism — what drew you to this style, and why did you choose it as your main focus?
Black and grey realism has always fascinated me because it allows emotions to speak through light, shadow, and texture. Without the distraction of color, you’re forced to focus on depth, detail, and storytelling — and that’s exactly what I love about it. I’m drawn to the challenge of making something look alive on the skin, whether it’s a portrait, an animal, or a symbolic piece.
For me, black and grey is timeless. It ages beautifully, it has a strong visual impact, and it gives me the freedom to create pieces that feel real, personal, and emotional. Over time, I naturally gravitated toward this style because it combines everything I enjoy most: precision, contrast, and bringing stories to life in a realistic way.

Do you also explore other tattoo styles, and what can clients expect when they come to you for a tattoo?
Yes, absolutely. While black and grey realism is my main focus, I also enjoy working in other styles such as fine line, illustrative elements, and selective color accents — especially when it helps elevate a design or make a story stronger. For me, it’s less about fitting into a category and more about creating something unique that flows with the client’s idea and body.
When people come to me, they can expect a customized experience from start to finish. I take the time to really understand the story behind the tattoo and then design something that feels personal, meaningful, and one-of-a-kind. My goal is always the same: clean execution, strong details, and a tattoo that the client will be proud of for a lifetime.
You’ve attended several conventions and even won awards — how have these experiences influenced your career?
Attending conventions has pushed me to grow faster as an artist. When you’re surrounded by talented tattooers from all over the world, you automatically raise your own standards. It forces you to step out of your comfort zone, work under pressure, and continuously refine your technique.
Winning awards was a great honor and definitely a motivating milestone for me, but the biggest impact came from the experience itself — meeting inspiring artists, sharing knowledge, and building connections within the tattoo community. Each convention reminds me why I love this craft and drives me to keep evolving, stay humble, and always deliver my best work for my clients.

You own a tattoo studio — how do you balance tattooing with managing the business, and what do you consider the most important qualities your studio offers besides great tattoos?
Running a studio while tattooing full time is definitely a challenge, but I’m lucky — I don’t do it alone. My wife Sophia and I run Carolina Icon Ink together, and we divide responsibilities based on our strengths so I can stay focused on creating art while she helps manage communication and studio organization. That teamwork is the foundation that allows us to give 100% to both the craft and the business.
We also share our location with Salon Rebel Rebel, and we’re truly grateful to be surrounded by such a talented and supportive group of artists, stylists, and creative people. We all help each other, uplift each other, and create an environment where everyone can grow — including our own team and apprentices. That kind of community is rare, and we’re proud to be part of it.
For us, the most important thing beyond the tattoo itself is the experience. We want every client to feel welcome, comfortable, and understood from the first message to the final session. A clean atmosphere, honest communication, high standards, and a genuine connection — that’s what our studio stands for. We don’t aim to be the biggest shop in the area; we want to be the place people trust when it comes to meaningful, personal, high-quality tattoos.
What inspires you the most — whether in art, life, or the people around you?
I draw my inspiration from real life — from the people around me, their stories, and the emotions behind them. Every client who sits in my chair has a reason for their tattoo, and those personal meanings drive me more than anything else. I’m also inspired by my family and the creative environment I’m surrounded by every day. Being around my wife, our team, and other passionate artists constantly motivates me to grow and push my own limits.
Artistically, I’m fascinated by contrast, emotion, and storytelling — whether in photography, film, or nature. I love capturing those moments that feel raw and honest, and translating them into something permanent on the skin. Inspiration is everywhere if you stay open and pay attention — and I try to carry that mindset into every piece I create.

Are there any upcoming projects or special plans you’re excited about?
Yes — we have a lot in the works that I’m really excited about. At the studio, we’re continuing to grow our team and focus on education, especially by supporting and developing new artists. We also plan to attend more conventions in the future, not only to compete, but to connect, learn, and keep building our name in the tattoo community.
Artistically, I’m working on several multi-session projects that allow me to go even deeper into realism and storytelling. I want to create larger, more complex custom pieces that really show what’s possible when a client gives full creative trust. There are also a few collaborations and studio events in planning — so there’s a lot coming, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time when you’re not tattooing?
When I’m not tattooing, I love spending time in nature — especially hiking through the mountains or the forest. Being outdoors helps me reset, find balance, and reconnect with myself and my family. My wife and I share many of these moments together, and I truly value the energy and inspiration that comes from experiencing life side by side.
I’m also passionate about fitness and healthy nutrition, because taking care of my body gives me the focus and strength I need for both my art and my life. Positive energy and personal growth are extremely important to me — I try to improve a little every single day and become a better version of myself than I was yesterday. That mindset keeps me motivated as an artist, a husband, a father, and a human being.
